Tip Comparison at Different Percentages
How much should I tip, and what does each person owe?
In US restaurants, 18–20% of the bill is the usual range for solid service; 15% is on the low side, 25% is for a great meal or a lot of extra work. Enter the amount you intend to tip on (pre-tax subtotal or the total — both are common), pick a percent or a dollar tip, then split by the number of people. The comparison table is there so you can see 15% vs 18% vs 20% before you tap a card.
If the check already includes an automatic gratuity (often 18–20% for large parties), do not add another full tip on top unless you mean to. Read the bottom of the receipt first.
US tipping situations this page is built for
- Dine-in: 18–20% is the default most servers expect when service was fine.
- Delivery: often 10–15% with a $3–$5 floor on small orders; more in bad weather.
- Takeout: optional; many people round up or leave 0–10%.
- Bars: $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab, whichever is higher on a slow round.
Even split vs itemized split
This tool divides one bill plus tip evenly. That is what “we’ll just split it four ways” means. If one person ordered steak and another had a salad, use the split bill calculator so tip follows what each person actually ordered.
Tip = bill × (tip % ÷ 100)
Total = bill + tip
Per person = total ÷ people
Worked check: $86.40 bill, 20%, three people
- Tip = $86.40 × 0.20 = $17.28
- Total = $103.68
- Each person = $34.56
- At 18% the total would be $101.95 ($1.73 less as a group).
