What do I actually pay after the sale and the coupon?
Stores almost never add percents. A 25% off sale, then a $10 coupon, is 25% off first, then $10 (or the reverse if the tag says coupon first). This page applies discounts in the order you enter them and shows dollars saved plus the effective percent off the original price.
Sales tax is usually added after discounts. Treat this number as pre-tax unless your receipt already baked tax into the “original.”
Stacked discounts are sequential
$80 item, 25% off → $60. Then $10 off → $50. You saved $30, which is 37.5% off $80 — not 35%. Adding 25% + 10% is the mistake this calculator exists to prevent.
After percent off: price × (1 − percent ÷ 100)
After dollar off: max(0, price − amount)
Effective % off = saved ÷ original × 100
Match the shelf tag
- “Extra 10% off sale price” means percent #2 runs on the already-reduced number.
- BOGO and “lowest item free” are not the same as a single percent off the cart — check the register.
- Employee or military discounts sometimes exclude sale items.
