Split Bill Calculator

Free split bill calculator for even splits or custom uneven amounts per person, with optional shared tip. Ideal for group dinners, roommates, and shared orders.

How do we split a check fairly when orders are not equal?

Two modes: even when everyone is sharing the table the same way, and uneven when you type each person’s food-and-drink subtotal. Uneven mode assigns tip in proportion to those amounts, which is the usual “you pay for what you ordered, plus your share of tip” rule.

Decide whether tax is already in the numbers you type. If you paste line items from the receipt, they usually already include tax on food; don’t add tax twice.

When even split is the wrong tool

  • One person drank most of the wine.
  • Someone is covering a guest who ordered more.
  • You need to keep a running list of who ordered what.

Math for an uneven split

Example: $40 + $20 + $20 = $80 subtotal, 18% tip = $14.40. The $40 order pays half the tip ($7.20) and owes $47.20. Each $20 order pays $3.60 tip and owes $23.60.

Tip pool = subtotal × (tip % ÷ 100)

Person tip share = (their amount ÷ table subtotal) × tip pool

They owe = their amount + their tip share

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a split bill unevenly calculator work?
In uneven / custom split mode, you add a row for each person with their name and what they actually owe (their own order total). The calculator sums these amounts, applies an optional shared tip proportionally, and shows exactly what each named person owes - no need for everyone to pay the same amount.
How do I split a bill when everyone ordered different amounts?
Use the Custom / Uneven Split mode. Add a row per person with their individual order amount, then calculate. Each person's share is based on what they actually ordered rather than an even division, which is fairer when orders vary significantly.
Can I split a bill with tip included?
Yes. Both modes support an optional tip percentage. In even split mode, the tip is added to the whole bill and then divided equally. In uneven split mode, the tip is distributed proportionally - so someone whose order was twice as large pays roughly twice the tip share, which mirrors how tips are usually intended to work.
What is the difference between even and uneven splitting?
Even splitting divides the total bill (plus any tip) equally among everyone, regardless of what each person ordered. Uneven splitting has each person enter their own amount, so people who ordered more pay more. Choose even for simple group outings, uneven when orders vary a lot.
Is tip split evenly or by amount in uneven mode?
This calculator distributes tip proportionally to each person's order amount in uneven mode - someone who ordered more contributes a larger share of the tip. If you'd prefer a flat, equal tip split regardless of order size, simply divide the tip amount separately and add it to each person's total by hand.
How many people can I add to the split?
There's no fixed limit - use the 'Add Person' button to add as many rows as you need in Custom / Uneven Split mode, and remove any row with the x button next to it.
Can I use this for splitting rent or shared expenses, not just a restaurant bill?
Yes. The uneven split mode works for any situation where different people owe different amounts toward a shared total, such as splitting a grocery run, a shared Airbnb, or utility bills alongside roommates.
