Tile Calculator

Free tile calculator to estimate how many tiles and boxes you need for floors, walls, and backsplashes. Includes waste factor (10-20%), custom tile sizes, and grout.

Listed on tile box packaging

How many boxes of tile, plus extra for cuts?

Tile is sold by the box with a listed coverage. You need floor (or wall) square footage × (1 + waste). Waste of 10% is a starting point for a simple rectangle; 15–20% if there are many cuts, a diagonal layout, or a beginner with a wet saw.

Order of operations

  • Measure length × width (or use square footage for odd rooms).
  • Add waste. Round up to whole boxes — leftover tile is for future repairs.
  • Grout: bag coverage depends on joint width and tile size; the calculator’s grout estimate is a planning number, not a spec sheet.

Layout mistake that empties the box

Starting in the center of a room can leave skinny slivers at the walls. Dry-lay or snap lines first. Those sliver cuts are why waste is not optional.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many tiles do I need for my room?
To find the number of tiles needed, calculate the total square footage of your area (Length × Width), multiply by 1.10 to 1.15 to add a 10% to 15% waste factor for cutting and edge pieces, then divide by the square footage of a single tile. For example, a 100 sq ft room with 12"×12" tiles (1 sq ft each) at 10% waste requires 110 tiles.
How much tile waste percentage should I add?
Add **10%** for standard grid layouts with square or simple rectangular tiles. Add **15%** for diagonal patterns, running bond (offset), or rooms with many angles, closets, and doorways. Add **20%** for intricate patterns like herringbone, chevron, or mosaic tile sheets.
How do I calculate how many boxes of tile to buy?
Check the packaging specification for 'Square Feet per Box' (typically 10 to 15 sq ft per box depending on the tile manufacturer). Divide your total square footage (including waste) by the sq ft per box, and always round UP to the nearest full box.
Should I buy extra tile boxes?
Yes, always keep at least one unopened extra box from the same dye lot. Future tile repairs or plumbing work may require replacing tiles, and manufacturers frequently discontinue specific styles or produce slightly different color dye lots in subsequent production runs.
How much grout do I need for my tiling project?
Grout quantity depends on tile size and grout joint width. Larger tiles (like 12"×24" or 24"×24") have fewer seams and require less grout (~0.5 lb per 10 sq ft), while small mosaic or subway tiles have many joints and need more (~1 to 1.5 lbs per 10 sq ft).
