Grass Seed Calculator
Free grass seed calculator for lawns and yards. Calculate exact seed in pounds and bags for new lawn planting or overseeding by grass type (Fescue, Bluegrass, Bermuda, Ryegrass).
Lawn Seed Requirements
Keep the top 1/2 inch of soil consistently moist by misting lightly 2 to 3 times per day for the first 14–21 days until seedlings reach 2 inches in height.
How many pounds of seed for a new lawn vs overseeding?
Bag labels list pounds per 1,000 sq ft for new lawn and a lower rate for overseeding. Cool-season blends (fescue, bluegrass, rye) and warm-season (bermuda, zoysia) are different rates. This page uses typical US bag rates so you can convert your lot size into bags.
Don’t mix up the two rates
- New lawn / bare soil: higher rate, often 5–10 lb per 1,000 sq ft depending on species.
- Overseeding: often about half, so you don’t choke existing grass.
- Keep seed in contact with soil; throwing it on uncut thatch wastes the bag.
