Grass Seed Calculator

Free grass seed calculator for lawns and yards. Calculate exact seed in pounds and bags for new lawn planting or overseeding by grass type (Fescue, Bluegrass, Bermuda, Ryegrass).

How many pounds of seed for a new lawn vs overseeding?

Bag labels list pounds per 1,000 sq ft for new lawn and a lower rate for overseeding. Cool-season blends (fescue, bluegrass, rye) and warm-season (bermuda, zoysia) are different rates. This page uses typical US bag rates so you can convert your lot size into bags.

Don’t mix up the two rates

  • New lawn / bare soil: higher rate, often 5–10 lb per 1,000 sq ft depending on species.
  • Overseeding: often about half, so you don’t choke existing grass.
  • Keep seed in contact with soil; throwing it on uncut thatch wastes the bag.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pounds of grass seed do I need for a 5,000 sq ft lawn?
It depends on your grass species and whether you are overseeding or starting bare ground. For **overseeding Tall Fescue**, you need about **20 lbs of seed** (4 lbs per 1,000 sq ft). For **new lawn planting of Kentucky Bluegrass**, you need **12.5 lbs** (2.5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft due to very small seed size).
What is the difference between seeding rate for new lawn vs overseeding?
A new lawn on bare dirt requires a higher seeding rate (typically **6 to 8 lbs per 1,000 sq ft** for fescue/ryegrass) to establish thick turf and block weeds. Overseeding an existing, thinning lawn requires roughly **half the rate (3 to 4 lbs per 1,000 sq ft)** to thicken density without overcrowding existing root systems.
When is the best time of year to plant grass seed?
For **cool-season grasses** (Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass), early **Fall (late August through October)** is the ideal window with warm soil and cool air. For **warm-season grasses** (Bermuda, Zoysia), late **Spring through early Summer (May through June)** provides optimal soil temps above 70°F.
How often should I water new grass seed?
Water **2 to 3 times daily for 5 to 10 minutes** to keep the top 1/2 inch of soil damp. Never allow the seed to dry out during the critical 14–21 day germination window.
