How to Calculate Materials for a Paver Patio or Walkway

Building a long-lasting interlocking brick or stone paver patio requires more than just pavers—a solid sub-base is essential to prevent settling, shifting, and puddling. This paver calculator determines the complete bill of materials: the number of pavers, tons of crushed gravel base, tons of bedding sand, and bags of polymeric jointing sand.

  • Patio Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
  • Pavers Needed = (Patio Area × (1 + Waste %)) / (Paver Length (in) × Paver Width (in) / 144)
  • Gravel Base (Cubic Yards) = (Patio Area × (Depth in inches / 12)) / 27
  • Gravel Base (Tons) = Cubic Yards × 1.4 tons/yd³
  • Bedding Sand (1" layer) = (Patio Area × (1 / 12)) / 27 × 1.35 tons/yd³
  • Polymeric Sand Bags = Patio Area / 65 sq ft per 50lb bag

A 10×10 patio is 100 square feet. Each standard 4"×8" brick paver is 0.222 sq ft (requiring 4.5 pavers per sq ft). With a **10% cutting and waste factor**, you need **495 pavers** (approx. 450 net + 45 for cuts).
How deep should the gravel base be under pavers?
For residential pedestrian patios and garden walkways, install a minimum of **4 inches of compacted crushed stone gravel base** (such as 3/4" crusher run / road base). For driveways or heavy vehicular loads, increase gravel depth to **8 to 10 inches**.
How much bedding sand do I need for a paver patio?
Lay a uniform **1-inch layer of coarse concrete sand** directly on top of the compacted gravel base. For a 100 sq ft patio, this requires about **0.31 cubic yards (approx. 0.42 tons)** of bedding sand. Never compact bedding sand before laying pavers.
How many bags of polymeric sand do I need?
One 50-pound bag of polymeric joint sand covers approximately **50 to 75 square feet of standard brick pavers** (with 1/8" to 1/4" joints). For larger slab pavers with fewer joints, one bag can cover up to 100 sq ft.
