How Does This Fence Material Calculator Work?

Building a wooden boundary or privacy fence is one of the most rewarding home DIY projects, but buying materials piecemeal leads to wasted trips to the lumber yard. This fence calculator calculates your exact lumber package: 4×4 posts, 2×4 horizontal stringer rails, vertical pickets (1×4 or 1×6), post hole concrete bags, and exterior screws.

The Fence Calculation Formulas

  • Number of Sections = Total Linear Feet / Post Spacing (8 ft or 6 ft)
  • Posts Needed = Number of Sections + 1 (plus 1 per gate)
  • 2×4 Rails Needed = Number of Sections × Rails per Section (2, 3, or 4)
  • Pickets Needed = (Total Linear Inches / Effective Picket Width) × Style Multiplier × 1.05
  • Concrete Bags = Total Posts × 2 bags (50 lb / 60 lb)

Worked Example: 150-Foot 6-Ft Privacy Fence with 1 Gate (8-Ft Spacing)

  1. Sections: 150 ft / 8 ft = 18.75 → 19 sections.
  2. Posts: 19 + 1 (end post) + 1 (gate post) = 21 4×4 posts (8ft or 9ft long).
  3. Rails (3 rails per section): 19 sections × 3 = 57 2×4 rails.
  4. Pickets (1×6 at 5.5" actual): 1,800 inches / 5.5" = 328 → with 5% waste = 345 pickets.
  5. Concrete: 21 posts × 2 bags = 42 bags of quick-setting concrete.

With standard 8-foot post spacing, 100 feet of fence has 13 sections (100 ÷ 8 = 12.5 → 13 sections). That requires **14 posts** (sections + 1 end post). If adding 1 gate, add 1 additional post for a total of **15 posts**.
How many bags of concrete per fence post?
Plan for **two 50-lb or 60-lb bags of fast-setting concrete per 4×4 post hole** (assuming a 10-inch diameter hole dug 24 to 36 inches deep). For heavy gate hinge posts or terminal corner posts, use 3 bags.
How many 1x6 pickets do I need for a 100-foot privacy fence?
A standard 1×6 picket is 5.5 inches wide. 100 linear feet equals 1,200 inches. 1,200 ÷ 5.5 = 218 pickets. Adding a 5% waste and split board allowance gives **230 pickets**.
Should a 6-foot privacy fence have 2 or 3 horizontal rails?
