What Does This Split Bill Calculator Do?

This split bill calculator handles two common situations: splitting a bill evenly across a group, and splitting a bill unevenly when everyone ordered something different. Switch between the two modes using the tabs above the calculator.

Even Split Mode

In even split mode, everyone pays the same amount regardless of what they individually ordered. Enter the total bill amount, the number of people, and an optional tip percentage:

  • Tip Amount = Bill Amount x (Tip % / 100)
  • Total = Bill Amount + Tip Amount
  • Amount Per Person = Total / Number of People

For example, a 120.00 bill split between 4 people with a 10% tip: Tip = 12.00, Total = 132.00, and each person pays 33.00.

Custom / Uneven Split Mode

In uneven split mode, you add each person by name along with the amount they specifically owe (their own order subtotal). The calculator sums every entry into a subtotal, then - if you add a shared tip percentage - distributes the tip proportionally: a person whose order was a larger share of the subtotal pays a proportionally larger share of the tip.

Worked Example

Three people order different amounts, and the group agrees on a 15% shared tip:

  • Alex: 20.00 ordered
  • Bailey: 30.00 ordered
  • Casey: 50.00 ordered

Subtotal = 100.00. Total tip = 100.00 x 15% = 15.00.

  • Alex's tip share = (20/100) x 15.00 = 3.00 -> owes 23.00
  • Bailey's tip share = (30/100) x 15.00 = 4.50 -> owes 34.50
  • Casey's tip share = (50/100) x 15.00 = 7.50 -> owes 57.50

Which Mode Should You Use?

  • Even split: Best for a group that agreed to split everything equally, regardless of who ordered what (common for shared appetizers, drinks-only nights, or simplicity).
  • Uneven split: Best when orders vary significantly - one person got a steak and another got a salad - and you want each person to pay closer to what they actually consumed.

Tips for Splitting Bills Fairly

  • Agree on the splitting method before ordering to avoid awkward conversations later.
  • For shared items (appetizers, a bottle of wine), consider splitting those evenly even in uneven mode, and only itemize individual mains.
