Why Use a Coffee to Water Ratio Calculator?
Brewing café-quality coffee at home comes down to precision. Using measuring spoons often leads to inconsistent cups because dark roast beans are less dense and take up more volume than dense light roasts. Weighing your coffee and water in grams with a digital kitchen scale guarantees consistent extraction, balanced flavor, and no bitterness.
Standard Coffee Brewing Ratios by Method
| Brew Method | Ratio (Coffee : Water) | Grind Size | Water Temp | Flavor Profile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pour Over (V60 / Kalita) | 1:16 (or 1:15 stronger) | Medium-Fine | 200°F–205°F | Clean, bright, floral acidity |
| French Press | 1:15 | Coarse | 200°F | Full-bodied, rich, textured |
| Chemex | 1:16 | Medium-Coarse | 205°F | Ultra-clean, crisp, delicate |
| Automatic Drip | 1:16.5 | Medium | 195°F–205°F | Consistent everyday balance |
| AeroPress | 1:13 to 1:14 | Fine-Medium | 185°F–195°F | Sweet, punchy, espresso-adjacent |
| Cold Brew Concentrate | 1:5 | Extra Coarse | Cold (16–24 hrs) | Chocolatey, smooth, low-acid |
The 4-Step Pour Over Technique
- Rinse Filter: Place the paper filter in your brewer and rinse with hot water to wash away paper taste and preheat the vessel. Discard rinse water.
- Add Grounds: Add your weighed coffee grounds and make a small divot in the center. Tare your scale to 0.
- The Bloom: Pour water equal to ~2.5 to 3 times your coffee weight (e.g. for 25g coffee, pour ~65g water). Swirl gently and wait 45 seconds to release trapped carbon dioxide gas.
- Main Pours: Pour the remaining water in gentle, continuous spiral pulses, keeping the water level steady until you reach your target weight. Aim for a total brew time of 3:00 to 3:30.
