What Does This Sleep Calculator Do?
This calculator suggests the best times to go to sleep or wake up, based on completing full 90-minute sleep cycles. Choose "I need to wake up at..." to work backward from a target wake-up time, or "I'm going to sleep now" to work forward from the current time.
The Sleep Cycle Formula
Wake-Up Time = Now + 15 min to fall asleep + (Cycles × 90 min)
Worked Example: Waking Up at 7:00 AM
Counting back 6 full sleep cycles (9 hours) plus a 15-minute buffer to fall asleep:
- 6 cycles x 90 min = 540 minutes = 9 hours
- 9 hours + 15 minutes = 9 hours 15 minutes before 7:00 AM
- Suggested bedtime: ~9:45 PM
The calculator also shows 5-cycle (7.5 hr) and 4-cycle (6 hr) options for flexibility.
Why Sleep Cycles Matter
Sleep isn't uniform — it moves through repeating cycles of light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep, each lasting roughly 90 minutes. Waking up in the middle of a cycle (especially during deep sleep) is commonly associated with feeling groggy, while waking at the end of a cycle tends to feel more natural.
